Accommodation is payable in addition. On-site housing has been arranged in the University's halls of residence. Charges work out at \quid20 per day (exclusive of the iniquitous VAT). All meals are included. However, the rules regarding cancellation are rather different (because of the University's own rules regarding cancellation). The housing costs (i.e. \quid100 for 5 nights) must be prepaid. If cancellation occurs not less than 30 days prior to the starting date, 80\%\ of the fee is repayable: however, after that time, only 33\%\ of the fee is refundable. Clearly, the housing costs will be payable in sterling. Included no less than 13 presentations (and a general discussion). Speakers included Jacques D\'esarm\'enien, Pierre MacKay and Reinhard Wonneberger. \medskip\noindent {\sl Workshop on Font Design Systems}, May 18--19, Nice. Seems quite comprehensive from the list of papers. \MF\ is in there, but only one system among many. \medskip\noindent {\sl \MarkUp}, May 13--15. Torremolinos, M\'alaga, Spain. The title of this Conference hides a wealth of meaning. Its full description is: {\sl The Fifth International Conference on Database Publishing, Electronic Manuscript Preparation and the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML)}. It was preceded by a hands-on Application Workshop (hands-on experience at using SGML parser software). Obviously mainly SGML oriented. Nevertheless SGMLers do acknowledge the existence and power of \TeX. Ultimately we are involved in the same issues of markup. \medskip\noindent {\sl The First and Last EPMARKUP Conference}, February 19--20, Amsterdam. One or two of the papers presented at this Conference seemed of particular relevance, especially two on tabular typography (by Paul Lefrere of the OU, and Tony Randall of the Electronic Village). Again, SGML had a fair coverage. \medskip\noindent {\sl The Network/extensible Window System}, London, April 28. Organised by BCS. ``The Network/extensible Window System (NeWS) is a window system development platform\dots based on the PostScript language and imaging model, bringing PostScript's sophisticated graphics capabilities from the printed page onto the screen.'' \bigskip \eject \centerline{\bf Meetings} \centerline{\bf 2. yet to come} \medskip\noindent {\sl The Third Electronic Publishing Conference}, June 30--July 2, Wembley Conference Centre. The Conference itself is rather expensive (over {\it\$}500), but the accompanying exhibition is usually quite good, although almost totally ignorant of \TeX. This year however, several of the exhibitors have some \TeX\ relevance --- McQueen, Monotype, Compugraphic, Charlesworth, Autologic, Apple, and even Addison Wesley. Tickets are available from Pam Howard at Online on 01 868 4466. \medskip\noindent {\sl International Text and Image Processing Conference}, July 8--10, Wurzburg, W.~Germany. This looks like a rather star studded cast, including a Seybold, Charles Goldfarb (of SGML fame), Ray Goucher ({\sl\TeX\ after Knuth}), and talks by people from Adobe, Chelgraph, Rank Xerox, Springer Verlag, and St\"urz (I would find this one particularly interesting; the talk is entitled ``Developing additional customer services in scientific setting''; has anyone ever received a reply from St\"urz? --- there's one customer service they could try.) Organised by BCS in conjunction with the Alvey Directorate. ``This meeting offers attendees an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of PostScript, its implementation, and the design of applications to use PostScript.'' Sounds useful, especially if it lives up to its promise. I saved the best till last. Modesty forbids me from eulogising too much, but it should be sufficient to say that your \TeX\ street credibility will be determined by whether you attend. Can I say fairer than that? More details are given elsewhere in \TeX line.
