                To start the cups scheduler, choose the cups-1.3.5 menu item or click on the icon:
                This will load default conf files into /etc/cups and /etc/foomatic
                ..change /usr/bin/lp, lpr, lpstat & /usr/sbin/lpc
                ..prompt for a root password
                ..and start the cups browser interface in firefox
                To install a printer, first search the web for a ppd file for your printer
                or use hplip_ppd.tar.gz from mydsl testing
                ..click on the  add printer  button in the cups browser interface
                ..and follow the instructions.

                Additional steps for an hp all-in-one printer/scanner/fax
                $ sudo /opt/cups-1.3.5/sbin/ptal-init setup
                ... then click on the  add printer  button in the cups browser interface
                Choose device uri of the form ptal:/mlc:usb:OfficeJet_G85 [for example]
                ***This needs to be repeated at each boot***

                To add the cups-pdf printer
                ..choose  Add Printer  in the cups browser interface
                ..choose device:  CUPS-PDF (Virtual PDF Printer) 
                ..choose make:  Generic 
                ..choose model:  Generic CUPS-PDF Printer (en) 
                ..this should give Device URI: cups-pdf:/
                files will be saved according to the user that printed them:
                dsl -> /home/dsl
                root -> /root
                guest -> /var/spool/cups-pdf/ANONYMOUS

                In order for the printer to persist after rebooting,
                add the following to your backup:
                /etc/cups/printers.conf
                /etc/cups/ppd/OfficeJetG85.ppd [for example]
                /etc/cups/cupsd.conf (only if you changed it)
                /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf (only if you changed it)
                /etc/foomatic/filter.conf (only if you changed it)
                /etc/hp/hplip.conf (only if you changed it)
                /etc/sane.d/dll.conf (only if you changed it)

                To test printing, click on the  print test page  button
                in the cups browser interface
                or
                lp -d OfficeJetG85 filename [for example]

                To add multiple printers to firefox:
                ..enter  about:config  in the url box
                ..double-click on  print.printer_list 
                ..enter the names of your cups printers separated by spaces

                To restore the original /usr/bin/lp, lpr, lpstat & /usr/sbin/lpc
                After unloading this extension:
                $ sudo mv /tmp/cups/lpc /usr/sbin
                $ sudo mv /tmp/cups/* /usr/bin
